2010-03-15 Calgary Harddrive Hack
I haven't been slacking off, really. I just haven't been taking many photos and documenting some of the stuff that I've been working on.
Well, on this particaular day I was wondering what the pins did on hard drives. Mostly, the hard drive has a little diagram specifying what pins can be shorted for specific options (lba, >32gb, etc).
I wondered if the other two pins were access ports. So I hooked up a serial cable to the ports, and I got a bunch of garbage. Then I thought, I bet it's TTL! So I used a Microchip PIC18F4685 on my custom pcb and wrote a little 232 to TTL program.
I then connected my Microchip's UART TTL to the hard drive and tried a few different baud rates. At 9600 (common), I was accessing the hard drive's access port. I don't know what I can do with it, but I played around anyway.
