2007-06-05 Calgary Linuxmce Installation
Oh hi there. Let's talk about open source for a second, so I can let you know what a pile of shit it is. Don't waste your time, ever, ever.. messing with open source products. Developed by idiots who can't get real jobs or have incredibly bad social skills which is a product of not being as smart as they wish they were in the first place.
Well here is how it works. Companies who make products for profit hire programmers. The money from the product goes towards silly things like marketting, janitors and human resources. But it also goes towards QA testing!! Keyword, testing! Testing is taking seriously in a company because people are paid $money$ to do it. Money gives people a drive, a focus, and a reason to do it. Where the opposite of open source developers is an attempt at proving everyone who bugged them in highschool that they're a somebody.
Well you are right! You are a somebody! A somebody who wasted two days of my friggin life. And i want it back! I wish I went to your highschool so I could give you the biggest wedgy to set world wedgy records. I'd split you in two with your own tighty whities! Give up your frigging open source shit and get a job at a comic book store.
So you're wondering what my rant is all about?
My Media PC (Personal Video Recorder) was running Microsoft's Windows Media Center 2005. A very simple interface that gives you the ability to record and pause live tv. Plus a few other features for indexing mp3's, photo's, video's and a nice tv guide interface.
Well the computer crashed (motherboard failure), and of course silly Microsoft has a limit on the number of times you can use a serial number. Well I've re-installed enough and that limit is up. Of course I can phone Microsoft and explain the story to get a new serial number. Instead I decided let's see what else is out there.
I stumbled across a few interfaces such as MythTv, Freevo, SageTV, and of course LinuxMCE.
Well all other applications were cludgy and required lots of dependencies, source builds, etc that I did not want to waste time with. Meanwhile good old LinuxMCE was gloating about easy installation of it's out-of-the-box media solution.
***BEEEEP**** WRONG
I should have known when I watched the youtube video with that the fat guy in jogging pants who was too lazy to turn on his own TV. Instead I went and downloaded the ISO images for Ubuntu and LinuxMCE V1.0
--- TAKE 1 ------
This is where I saw a glimpse of light in the open source tunnel. Installation of Ubuntu was a breeze and the interface was bright full of useful applicatons. WOW!
Next, insert the LinuxMCE CD. OKay, this will be a peice of cake! Tick tock tick tock, as the installation goes.
***UH OH****
My laptop goes offline. What the heck? Ping my router, I get a response. Okay what is wrong I think. Well after a few long minutes of checking cables and rebooting my router, I realized good old LinuxMCE has added a eth0:0 interface and took over my router's IP. Why? Because it wants to be the DHCP & Gateway!! Who the fuck knows why. But as I recall, there was a question if I wanted DHCP and I clearly choose NO!!!
So next I notice it decided to also change the name of the PC to DCEROUTER, and the domain to PLUTO, and who knows what else it's nazi script wanted to do.
I re-installed Ubuntu again, and attempted this LinuxMCE one more time. Same problem, same fustration, same fuck I hate open source!
--- TAKE 2 ------
I notice on the main page that there is a LinuxMCE Version 1.1 Beta 2. Oh wow! It runs on KDE (Kubuntu) because KDE has a feature that Ubuntu's gnome doesn't support. And a little bit about how great the new installation script is, etc.
So I set out to install Kubuntu. Took a while becuase KDE has a lot more dependencies then gnome. I was a little discouraged with the textmode install of Kubuntu over Ubuntu's graphical install. Oh well.
I put in the LinuxMCE CD and it told me it was going to upgrade the video driver. Great! Reboot... Not so great. Locked up!! I rebooted One hundred fifty nine thousand three hundred and six times. Always locked up. Always.
So I re-installed Kubuntu and set out to reinstall LinuxMCE, this time it's not going to trick me! Just say NO to new drivers!
Well, I said no. The installation began. OH FUCK NO!! There's that DHCP question again, I bet they fixed it. No fucking way? Still forces a dhcp server, even when I said no. Still changes the hostname and still just sucks.
Did the installation finish? Fuck no. It takes 5 hours of course before it craps out. No error message, just physically locks up.
--- What now? -----
I'm going to the get another Microsoft Media Center licence key. And never touch open source shit again.
LinuxMCE SUCKS!!! OPEN SOURCE SUCKS!!!
